Tutorial: Twisted Chignon
Step 1: Start clean.
Before creating your twisted chignon, start off with a clean slate. Wash your hair with Dove Radiant Shine Shampoo and condition with Dove Radiant Shine Conditioner for a clean, fresh and shiny base.
Step 2: Create braid.
Begin creating your twisted updo by creating a braid on the side of your hair and then clipping it away while you work on the back.
Step 3: Create your chignon.
Gather your back section into a low ponytail. Backcomb the ends of your hair to create texture then wrap the hair around your hair tie to form a bun. Insert your hairpins around the base of your chignon to secure your hair in place.
Step 4: Pin braid back.
Bring your braid back and wrap it around the base of your bun. Slide hairpins to secure in place.
Step 5: Set your style.
To finish your look, set it by spraying a liberal amount of TRESemmé TRES Two Freeze Hold Hairspray and you’re done!
7 Ways To Wear a Twisted Chignon Hairstyle
1. The Classic Chignon
Let’s kick things off with this classic chignon, as for most people this will be the most recognizable way of wearing the look. The perfect balance between sexy, glamorous and yet still romantic thanks to the sweeping side fringe, it’s flattering on women of all ages and hair types, which is why it’s so well-loved.
2. Braided Twisted Chignon
Heading to prom? To avoid twinning with the 50 other girls rocking a chignon on prom night, why not make your updo more unique by adding a braided detail? Combined with sleek, slicked-down sides make for a red carpet-worthy hairstyle that’ll have you crowned prom queen in a flash.
3. Ornate Accessories
Ornate hair accessories are everything right now. But naturally, such elaborate accessories call for minimalist styles to prevent looking too ‘try hard’. A basic twisted chignon is perfect for pairing with a glitzy embellished headband or hair slide and compliments the high-fashion vibes flawlessly.
4. Messy Chignon
Taking the elegant, feminine vibes of this style and giving it a more undone, I-woke-up-like-this twist, a messy chignon is the perfect weekend look when you can’t be bothered to do anything with your hair. If you have naturally fine, slippery hair, set your hair with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray Texture Hold Level 1 to help lock in the messy texture of your style.
5. Beret Buns
French girl hair has never been so sought after and nothing proves this better than the beret trend. Give your twisted chignon a cosmopolitan twist by keeping it low at the nape of your neck and pairing with a classic Parisian-inspired beret in a color of your choice. C’est très chic, non?
6. Floral Twisted Chignon
Impromptu date night? No time to wash your hair? No problem. A chignon is the perfect quick fix style and doesn’t require any heat styling at all. Simply twist your hair into a quick bun and top off the look with floral accessories for a romantic touch.
7. Origami Chignon
Spend your weekend exploring galleries? Artistic sorts will love this origami-inspired updo. The sharp angles give the look a bold, unique finish—but don’t be scared, you don’t actually have to cut your hair to get the effect! Simply try wrapping a section of hair around the base of your twisted chignon to create a wrap detail. It’s the little tweaks that make the biggest difference!
