Is it Safe to Dye Hair When Pregnant?
1. Talk to your doctor.
With any important question that comes up with your pregnancy, you should always consult with your doctor. Your doc knows you, your body, and your baby best, so they will be able to make an informed decision. If hair dye is on your mind while pregnant, ask your doctor what they think about’ is it safe to dye hair when pregnant’ before you head to the salon.
2. Do your research.
Before you decide to dye your hair when pregnant, do the research on whether this is safe or not. Ask your colorist, speak with friends and talk with other pregnant women. Getting their insight can be really helpful in order to help you make an informed and knowledgeable choice.
3. Hair dye tips you should consider.
Henna dye is often thought of as a safe alternative to dyeing hair. To better understand hennas, we received some insight from Unilever’s Leon-van Gorkom, who noted that not all hennas are the same. He went on to say “some chemicals can be added to alter the color of henna. Hennas that promise other colors than red are so-called compound hennas and these “henna colors” are created with metallic salts. The most frequently used material is lead acetate, though silver nitrate, copper, nickel, cobalt, bismuth and iron salts have also been used.” Leon-van Gorkom further went on to explain: “If you do not like the result of your henna coloring treatment and you want to correct it, please contact a color expert. You have to be careful when using normal permanent colors after a henna treatment. Hennas that produce other colors than red may contain metallic salts that will react with ammonia (or derivatives thereof) in the permanent dye and this will result in greenish color and damage or even fry your hair.” If you do happen to dye your hair when you are pregnant, make sure that you maintain your color so you don’t need to dye it so often. Using a color-safe shampoo and conditioner will help to prevent color fading, as well as only washing your hair every other day. We like the Suave Keratin Infusion Color Care Shampoo and Suave Keratin Infusion Color Care Conditioner for maintaining color and hair strength!
