A bubble half updo is such a unique twist on the half-up style we all know and love. The “bubble” effect is done by gently pancaking the hair around the mini ponytails you create. We get it, this style looks very intricate, but it’s actually pretty simple to do! Plus, it keeps your hair out of your face throughout the entire party. Keep scrolling to find out how you can achieve the bubble braid for your next holiday party.
How to Create the Bubble Half Updo
1. Dry Shampoo Your Hair
On dry hair, start by applying a dry shampoo, like Love Beauty and Planet Juicy Grapefruit Day 2 Dry Shampoo. This is a great product to use if you need a little extra volume in your hair, especially if you’re working with second-day hair. All you have to do is hold the can 7 to 10 inches away from your hair, spray the dry shampoo at your root, and then massage it into your hair to absorb excess oil. This is seriously a lifesaver. Trust us.
2. Protect Your Strands for the Bubble Half Updo
Before we start curling our hair for this style, it’s crucial we use a heat protectant. We love using TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray because it helps protect your hair against damage and friction from styling tools. Plus, it adds a touch of softness and shine to your strands. Just spray the product starting from the midshaft of your hair down to the ends, and then comb through to distribute evenly.
3. Curl Your Hair
Now that your hair is all volumized and protected, it’s time to begin curling it. Start by wrapping pieces of hair around your curling iron, making sure you curl away from your face. Once all of the curls are cooled, gently brush our hair to loosen the curl and create more if a wave.
4. Create the Bubble Half Updo
It’s time for the exciting part: the bubble half updo! Start by making a small ponytail with the section of hair at the crown of your head and then secure this will a clear elastic. Next, create a second ponytail with the sections of hair on the sides of your head. These are the sections that are just above your ear, but below the crown of your head. Once you have two ponytails, split the first ponytail you created in half and then re-connect the two halves underneath the second ponytail with a clear elastic. When you re-connect the two halves, make sure the elastic is tied near the base of the second ponytail, this will make it easier to do the bubble effect. Repeat the bubble half updo steps two more times to finish off the updo. Once you reach the end of your half ponytail, use a clear elastic to secure everything.
5. Bring out the Bubble
So, you technically are finished with your half-updo, but it’s time to create the bubble effect, which will take this style to the next level! Pancake the loops of hair around the ponytails by gently pulling on the loops to create a fuller illusion.
6. Finish With Hairspray
Alright, you’re officially done, which means you’re ready to take on your next holiday party! To ensure your style stays put all night, finish with a few spritzes of TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Texture Hold Level 1. This is one of our go-to hair sprays because it will help give your strands a light hold without making your hair feel stiff and crunchy.
